"Jesus I Know, and I Know About Paul, but Who Are You?"

So, I’ve been studying the book of Ephesians which references the Acts of Paul in my bible study group, and I’m finally starting to discover me!

Paul was an Apostle and deemed the 13th disciple of Jesus Christ. And in his heyday one could find Paul traveling the world speaking about the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ our savior. And when he wasn’t teaching, he spent his “down-time” casting out demons and healing the sick in a town where idol worship and magic were deemed gods.

Because he was so wildly successful at doing God’s work and converting non-believers, a Jewish Chief Priest decided he and his crew wanted a piece of the action. This Jewish Chief Priest and company began walking around town calling out the demon-possessed saying, “In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.”Acts 19:13 Now notice that the Priest did not make mention of the power invested in him by Jesus Christ, but instead referenced Jesus by way of Paul because he didn’t know Jesus Christ for himself.

Wanna know what happened next? Well here goes it…

“One day the evil spirit answered them, ‘Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?'” Acts 19:15

The passage doesn’t mention how this band of impostors reacted to this question, but instead goes on to say that the Jewish Chief Priest and his crew were jumped on and overpowered by the demon-possessed man who gave them a serious beating and sent them running from the house naked and bleeding. Acts 19:17

Talk about a sight to see!!!

But this merciless beating is the least of what’s captivating in this story. What’s most interesting about this is that the Priests were on the right track in that belief in Jesus Christ provides you with the power to stand firm against demons, but these priests didn’t know it for themselves because they were simply imitating! They were borrowing Jesus’ authority from Paul!!! Hence, they never answered the evil spirit who asked them who they were? To which they might have replied, “I am a child of God and by the power of the Holy Spirit given unto me by Jesus Christ I rebuke you and cast you out.” But they learned the hard way that this type of work doesn’t lend itself to improvisation.

How many of us are imitating our pastors, ministers and elders of the church, but don’t really have an understanding of Jesus Christ and our Father God rooted deeply in our own spirit? How many of us are going about our daily life and sprinkling in a few verses here and there mixed with a dash of church-going and a pinch of good-will but never have studied the Holy Bible?

Even Grandma in all of her wisdom and years can't make me believe who I am in Christ and as a Child of God... ...I've gotta know it for myself!

Even Grandma in all of her wisdom and years can’t make me believe who I am in Christ and as a Child of God…
…I’ve gotta know it for myself!

If that’s you (and I confess, its been me too), then it’s not enough.

As I read more about who I am (based on scripture) as a Wife, Mommy, Believer and Child of God, I’m able to see a clearer depiction of who I am and what I’m meant to be. And in light of the chaos, death and destruction that incessantly perverts this world, I realize that it is even more paramount that I know exactly who I am so that I can evoke the confidence and authority required to speak against evil and ultimately prevail…
…otherwise I’m in for a really serious beating!

How much do you know about who you are and what your inheritance is in our Father God as a result of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice? Are you confident that you can overtake evil?

Please Note: It’s not my intention to go calling out evil spirits, but if /when the situation presents itself, I want to be ready to call a Spade a Spade.
